Αίσωπος
Τα βιογραφικά στοιχεία του Αισώπου είναι αβέβαια. Ωστόσο, σύμφωνα με μια μυθιστορηματική βιογραφική παράδοση του 5ου π.Χ. αιώνα, ο Αίσωπος έζησε τον 6ο αιώνα και καταγόταν από τη Φρυγία. Ήταν απελεύθερος δούλος, ήταν ακόμα δύσμορφος, καμπούρης και τραυλός. Έζησε στη Σάμο και ταξίδεψε στην Ανατολή, στην Αίγυπτο και περισσότερο στην Κόρινθο του Περίανδρου και στην Αθήνα του Σόλωνα ερχόμενος έτσι σε επαφή με τους Επτά Σοφούς με τους οποίους ο ορθολογισμός του συγγένευε ιδεολογικά. Ο Αίσωπος, σύμφωνα πάντα με την ίδια παράδοση, πέθανε δολοφονημένος στους Δελφούς. Το έργο που μας άφησε (αγνοούμε με τι άλλο ασχολήθηκε) ήταν δυο με τρεις εκατοντάδες σύντομοι μύθοι με ζώα που μιλούν, και σπανιότερα με ανθρώπους ή θεούς, όπου συμπλέκονται η πονηριά με την αφέλεια και η καλοσύνη με τη μοχθηρία για να βγει στο τέλος, με τρόπο τερπνό, κάποιο διδακτικό συμπέρασμα, το οποίο μάλιστα διατυπώνεται με ένα επιμύθιο που συνοδεύει απαραίτητα κάθε μύθο έστω και αν είναι εντελώς αυτονόητο. Η αρχαιότερη σωζόμενη συλλογή μύθων του Αισώπου είναι του Δημητρίου του Φαληρέα (4ος αι. π.Χ.) Μεταγενέστερα ακολούθησαν πολλές άλλες, όχι αναγκαστικά ταυτόσημες, έτσι που η πρωτότυπη μορφή του κάθε μύθου χάνεται μέσα στην αχλή του χρόνου. Ο Αίσωπος, με τους μύθους του, είναι δημιουργός ενός πρωτότυπου είδους γραπτού λόγου που κάλυψε ένα κενό, και που κανένας άλλος δεν ασχολήθηκε με κάτι ανάλογο μετά απ’ αυτόν. Όσοι, μεταγενέστεροι, ασχολήθηκαν ήταν μόνο για να επεξεργαστούν λογοτεχνικά κάποιους μύθους, καθώς τον Αίσωπο τον χαρακτήριζε η λιτότητα. Ιδιαίτερα πετυχημένες τέτοιες διασκευές ήταν του Γάλλου Λαφονταίν (17ος αι.), του επίσης Γάλλου Φλοριάν (18ος αι.) και του Ρώσου Κριλόφ (18ος - 19ος αι.), όλες έμμετρες. Οι μύθοι του Αισώπου έγιναν τόσο αγαπητοί που ποτέ δεν έπαψαν, με τη μια ή την άλλη μορφή, να εκδίδονται και να επανεκδίδονται και να τέρπουν επί αιώνες μικρούς και μεγάλους και παρά το γεγονός ότι από λογοτεχνική άποψη δεν αριστεύουν, ήταν και είναι από τα πιο πολυδιαβασμένα κείμενα.
Η παρούσα έκδοση που σεβάστηκε τη αρχική μορφή των μύθων στοχεύει, όχι μόνο να τέρψει, αλλά και να κάνει τον αναγνώστη κοινωνό με το μοναδικό αυτό είδος του γραπτού λόγου που, μπορούμε να πούμε, έμεινε αθάνατο.

Φιλόσοφος που δίδαξε στη νεοπλατωνική σχολή της Αλεξανδρείας από το 420 έως το 450 μ.Χ. Ήταν επηρεασμένος τόσο από την πλατωνική φιλοσοφία όσο και των περιπατητών και των στωικών. Ανάμεσα στα γραπτά του που διασώθηκαν βρέθηκαν και κάπου εκατόν πενήντα αστεία από τα οποία επιλέξαμε αυτά που ακολουθούν και τα οποία, παρά το γεγονός ότι πέρασε από τότε μια τόσο μεγάλη χρονική περίοδος, διατηρούν τη δύναμη να χαρίζουν γέλιο μέχρι σήμερα.
